I was missing me some Joe Cheng so I thought I should rewatch some of his earlier dramas. So I was faced with the same dilemma, which one should I watch? I have seen ISWAK 1 and 2 a gazillion times so definitely not that one. There are a few JC dramas which I have shunned in the past including this, but eventually I ended up watching it.
Well, here’s what I thought.
The Bad:
The chemistry between the 2 main leads is completely lacking. It took every resolve I’ve got to finish this drama. And was it just me or was Joe overly effeminate here. I do love the look but the acting was too soft. His character was also very reminiscent of Zhi Shu (talk about typecast!).The female lead also lacked what Koreans would call aegyo. She was passable as a lead but not memorable. The storyline was unoriginal (read: love contract + ISWAK +ToGetHer) and it lacked the usual rivalry and cutesy scenes which I love about rom-coms in the first place.
The Good:
I gotta say the only thing I loved about it was Ethan Ruan. The guy can really act! I was totally buying the stuttering love-sick, geeky Kendo captain that he was. So I was disappointed that his part was so little. I think he can pull off any role.
But if you haven’t seen it, don’t let me spoil it for you.
It’s a story about an ordinary girl who fell in love with a guy because of a coin which the guy gave her during her most trying time. The guy who was dressed up as an angel was in fact not angelic at all but a guy with a bad attitude who turned out to be her classmates brother. She then did everything she could to help the guy and get his attention.
There, go watch it.
